SEMINATURAL WETLANDS

Creation of semi-natural wetlands in the perimeter strip of the Mar Menor

The creation of semi-natural wetlands around the lagoon will improve the water quality flowing into the Mar Menor, given their capacity to reduce the amount of nutrients and suspended solids in the water passing through them. They also contribute to land management, compatibility of land uses, and the improvement of biodiversity and landscape quality.

The wetlands to be initially implemented (San Pedro del Pinatar, Bocarrambla and Miranda) have been processed jointly in the ordinary environmental impact assessment procedure (EIAo).

→ Milestones achieved

  • Following the public comment period, the design of the San Pedro and Bocarrambla wetlands was modified, eliminating the permanent water feature. The construction of the Miranda wetland was also discarded due to the existence of a green buffer zone adjacent to the planned site.
  • The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was issued in November 2024 and published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) on 23/11/2024, thus concluding the Environmental Assessment. ( See the EIS )
  • The final design of the 2 wetlands has been specified in their respective implementation projects.
