Hydrological Forestry Restoration to reduce the risk of flooding and the environmental improvement of the Las Matildes, Beal, Carrasquilla and Ponce ravines
Project to be carried out in the ravines of Las Matildes, del Beal, de Carrasquilla and in the Ponce ravine, which originate in the Sierra Minera of La Unión and Cartagena, and flow into the Mar Menor.
The objective is to reduce the risk of flooding and improve the environmental condition of these ravines and, consequently, the Mar Menor lagoon. The actions aim to reduce water velocity, thereby mitigating erosion, and to slow the flow, thus facilitating sedimentation. To achieve this, the plan includes the restoration or creation of floodplains, the restoration of the channel morphology, hydrological correction (dams), and vegetation restoration.
This set of projects is complementary to the restoration of areas affected by mining.
The implementation projects are developed in two phases, depending on whether action is taken on the Public Water Domain (Phase 1) or on areas adjacent to it (Phase 2).
Phase 1 - Actions on the Public Water Domain of the mining ravines
The actions include, on the one hand, hydraulic works to correct the riverbeds that allow the retention of sediment and the mitigation of floods and, on the other hand, plantings for their renaturalization.
→ Milestones achieved
The construction and planting have been completed.
→ Latest developments
Only the aforementioned maintenance and replacement work remains until September 2026.
Phase 2 - Actions adjacent to the Public Water Domain
This phase incorporates larger flood control and flooding zones. It is being developed through three projects: one in the Beal ravine, another in the Las Matildes ravine, and another in the Carrasquilla ravine and the Ponce ravine. All three projects have been analyzed by the Project Supervision Office and adapted to the observations in that office's report.
→ Latest developments
The most advanced projects are the Las Matildes ravine and the Carrasquilla and Barranco de Ponce ravine.
Both have the technical approval of the Segura River Basin Authority and the proposal to award the works has been accepted.
