CONSOLIDATION AND RESTORATION OF MINING HERITAGE

Consolidation and restoration of mining heritage and conservation of associated natural values. Area of the Cartagena and La Unión Mining District

A large part of the Cartagena-La Unión Mining District is a designated Site of Cultural Interest (BIC Historic Site Cartagena-La Unión Mining District. NIC 24683/2009, inventory 42029). Within the scope of mining waste remediation projects, numerous remnants of industrial heritage associated with mining have been found. Therefore, there is an obligation to conserve them, allow their study, and permit free public access at least four days a month, in accordance with Law 4/2007 of March 16, on Cultural Heritage of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia.

The intervention includes:

• The consolidation and restoration of part of the buildings associated with the industrial mining heritage, preventing the collapse of damaged structures.
• Its adaptation to biodiversity (including various infrastructures such as ponds for amphibians, stone piles, insect shelters and nest boxes for birds and bats)

• The urgent elimination of risks to people (falls into wells, falling tiles and materials, falls from different levels).
