RENATURALIZATION AREAS

Renaturalization areas. Ecosystem restoration actions in the perimeter strip of the Mar Menor.


A series of projects to create a system of large areas (≥100 ha) that connect with similar areas and the existing network of protected spaces, transforming the terrain's morphology by restoring the traditional terraced landscape. The incorporation of native vegetation is expected to increase the retention of surface runoff, sediments, suspended solids, nitrates, and other potential pollutants. Sediment retention ponds and naturalized waterways will be created to mitigate the runoff received beneath the RM-12 highway.

→ Milestones achieved:

  • The project has been subject to the EIA procedure, with the DIA having been issued in July 2024 (BOE 18/07/2024).
  • The final design for each phase will be detailed in the implementation plans for each phase. The implementation plans for the Ecosystem Restoration – El Carmolí Area and the Los Nietos-Mar de Cristal Renaturalization Area have already been drafted.
